Organisations

Local government consists of 32 local authorities (or councils). They provide public services, including education, social care, waste management, libraries and planning.

The devolved government for Scotland and Executive Agencies have a range of responsibilities which include: health, education, justice, rural affairs, housing and the environment.

Executive NDPBs have a national remit and carry out functions at arm's length from Government. Advisory NDPBs carry out advisory functions and give advice to Ministers and others.

Are responsible for tasks and advice relating to specialist areas of the law, they carry out judicial functions yet are separate from the formal court system.

Industrial or commercial enterprises under direct control of Ministers.

Organisations that aim to safeguard, maintain and improve the quality of care provision in Scotland, including regional NHS Boards.

Have a range of roles including: safeguarding the rights of particular groups and reporting on, monitoring and handling complaints about the activity of public organisations.

Other significant agencies, organisations and public bodies that provide services to the people of Scotland. Including, organisations from the third and voluntary sectors and Non-Ministerial departments.
