The Scottish Information Commissioner promotes and enforces Scotland's freedom of information (FOI) law. This includes:
- investigating FOI appeals
- promoting the public's right to ask for information held by Scottish public authorities
- promoting good FOI practice to public authorities
- intervening when public authorities do not follow FOI law
