Overview

Dog keepers must make sure their dog gets a microchip implant by the time it's 8 weeks old. The microchip has a number that shows up when the dog's scanned. This number identifies the dog.

Dog keepers must also register information on a 'compliant' database. The databases that meet government standards are called 'compliant'. There's a list of compliant databases in Scotland.

Keeping a dog that is not microchipped could lead to:

  • a fine of up to £500
  • a court case against you

A keeper is the person a dog normally lives with.
