How long PVG membership lasts

The PVG scheme changed on 1 April 2026 from a lifetime membership to a five-year membership period.

Information for individuals

When you join the PVG scheme your membership lasts for five years. You need to renew your membership every five years to remain a member.

If you joined the scheme before 1 April 2026 and you've not made a PVG application since 1 April 2026, Disclosure Scotland will contact you to move you to the five-year membership. You do not need to take any action just now.

If you joined before 1 April 2026 and make another PVG application after that date, for example when moving to a new employer, you will automatically move to the five-year membership.

Renewal process

The renewal process is separate from applying for a PVG scheme disclosure. You will be able to renew your membership in your online account. There will be an offline option if you cannot use the digital service.

More information on the renewal process will be published on this webpage once the renewal dates are nearer.

Information for organisations

The five-year membership period does not change how you apply for PVG scheme disclosures.

Organisations should continue to:

  • submit PVG scheme applications as normal
  • notify Disclosure Scotland when an individual stops carrying out a regulated role

There is an e-learning guide with information on how to manage your PVG scheme members.
