Disclosure levels
A disclosure shows criminal record information. The most common reason for getting one is so you can share it with an employer. They can use it to help decide if you're right for a specific role.
There are different disclosure levels:
- Level 1
- Level 2
- Level 2 with barred list check
- Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme
Level 1 disclosure
This is the lowest level of disclosure. It has replaced basic disclosure.
Anyone can apply for a Level 1 disclosure. It's most commonly used to share with employers, but you can also get one for personal reasons.
It shows any unspent convictions you have.

Level 2 disclosure
This is only used for specific roles, such as solicitors and accountants. It has replaced standard disclosure.
It shows any unspent convictions and certain spent convictions. It also shows other information, such as any notification requirements.
The organisation you're working with will tell you if you need this disclosure. They need to start the application.

Level 2 with barred list check
This only used for specific activities, such as adopting a child. It has replaced enhanced disclosure.
It shows any unspent convictions and certain spent convictions. It also shows other information, such as whether you're barred from work with children or protected adults.
The organisation you're working with will tell you if you need this disclosure. They need to start the application.

PVG scheme
The PVG scheme is a membership scheme for people working with children or protected adults. It’s a legal requirement to join the scheme if you're doing a regulated role with these groups.
After applying you get a disclosure which shows any unspent convictions and certain spent convictions. It also shows other information, such as whether you're barred from roles with children or protected adults.
Organisations need to start PVG applications. You cannot apply on your own unless you're applying as self-employed.
