If you're doing the work

You must make sure the work you do is safe and meets Scottish building standards.

Meeting Scottish building standards

If you're doing your own building work, you must have the right skills and knowledge to do it. If you do not, you should get advice from a professional, like a builder or an architect.

For minor building work, use the technical handbooks on gov.scot for guidance. They help you meet Scottish building standards. You may still need to speak to your local council to get more advice.

Use of materials in building work

The material used in your building work must meet Scottish building standards.

The technical handbooks on gov.scot explain which materials meet the standards.

When you need to talk to your local council

Contact your local council before you start building work if your plans involve:

  • alterations
  • extensions
  • conversions
  • demolishing part or the whole of a building
  • building a new home
  • changing the structure of a building

Before you start any work, talk to your local council's building standards department. They will tell you if you need to apply for a building warrant.

Find out how to apply for a building warrant.

If you need a building warrant and do not get one, your local council can fine you. They can also order you to remove the new building work.
