Scottish building standards
Scottish building standards are rules that cover things like making sure building work:
- is safe
- meets building regulations
Read the building standards customer journey on mygov.scot. It explains the building standards system if you're starting building work.
Scottish building standards for minor work
If you do minor work in your home, such as fitting a new bathroom, it must meet Scottish building standards.
You might not need a building warrant for the work you are having done. But you should still get advice from an expert to make sure the work meets building regulations.
You should always check with your local council, even if the work is minor.
Scottish building standards for work to a building
You may need to apply to your local council for a building warrant if you're doing work that will change your home, for example if you plan to:
- increase the floor space of your home
- change the structure of your roof
If you're not sure if you need a building warrant
If you're not sure if you need a warrant, check with your local council's building standards department.
