Building warrants

You need a building warrant if your building plans include:

  • alterations
  • extensions
  • conversions
  • demolishing part or the whole of a building
  • building a new home
  • changing the structure of a building

You may also need to apply for planning permission if you're:

  • building a new home
  • extending your current home

If you need a building warrant and do not get one, your local council can fine you. They can also order you to remove the new building work.
