Getting a self-build mortgage
Self-build mortgages are different from normal mortgages.
A lender will not give you all the money you need in one large sum. You get the money in stages as you complete the build.
This is to protect the lender in case your build is abandoned.
Financial advice
Only some lenders offer self-build mortgages.
An independent financial adviser can help find a suitable lender for you. Check how to get financial advice on the Citizens Advice Scotland website.
Loan payment stages
Check when the first payment will be made. Only some lenders offer payments when you’re buying a plot.
You may have to show the lender:
- detailed plans for your house
- what you expect it to cost
- whether planning permission has been granted
