Talk to your lender

If you cannot afford to pay your mortgage, talk to your lender right away.

You could get help from your lender if they’ve signed up to the Mortgage Charter. Find out about the Mortgage Charter on GOV.UK.

You can ask to change the way you make payments. Your lender must consider your request.

You could reduce your monthly payments by:

  • agreeing a repayment plan
  • paying the debt over a longer period – this is called extending the term of the mortgage
  • switching to an interest-only mortgage
  • taking a break from making repayments – this is called a ‘payment holiday’
