Getting free vitamins when you're pregnant

Last updated: 10 June 2019

You can get free vitamins if you're pregnant. These are to help you and your baby stay healthy during your pregnancy.

The vitamins will be given to you by your midwife and they contain:

  • Folic acid
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin D

You should get these at an appointment when you are between 6 - 10 weeks pregnant.

Find out more about what these vitamins do for you and your baby on the NHS Choices website.

Some areas of Scotland already offer these free vitamins so it's worth checking with your midwife.

Healthy Start vitamins

You may be eligible to get free vitamins as part of the Healthy Start scheme when you are pregnant. You may also get vitamins for your children if they are aged 6 months to aged 4.

The Healthy Start vitamins are:

  • children's vitamin drops containing vitamins A, C and D
  • vitamins for pregnant women containing folic acid and vitamins C and D

Find out whether you are entitled to the Healthy Start vitamins on the GOV.UK website.
