Home emergency kit

You and your family should prepare for severe weather or emergencies. You should pack a small emergency kit and keep it in a safe place.

Keep your emergency kit in a waterproof bag and include:

  • a copy of your home emergency plan
  • a battery operated or wind up torch and radio
  • mobile phone chargers and spare batteries
  • essential medication, toiletries and a first aid kit
  • a 3 day supply of bottled water and ready-to-eat food (that will not go off)
  • photocopies of important documents like insurance policies and birth certificates
  • a pencil, paper, penknife and whistle
  • spare keys to your home and car
  • spare glasses or contact lenses

Think about what else is important for you and your family to get by during an emergency, for example:

  • pet supplies
  • food supplies
  • formula/baby food
