Paying your Council Tax bill
Your Council Tax bill tells you:
- who is registered for Council Tax in your home
- how much you have to pay for the year
- how that amount has been worked out
- the dates you have to pay
The cost is usually split into 10 monthly payments. You may also be able to pay smaller amounts:
- every week
- every 2 weeks
- over 12 months instead of 10
Ask your local council about the payment options they offer.
Working out how much you’ll pay
You’ll need to know 3 things:
- the Council Tax band of your home as listed on the Scottish Assessors website
- how much your local council charges for that band
- if your bill will have a discount, reduction or exemption applied
If you have an empty property or a second home, you may need to pay a rate that’s different from what your council charges for main homes.
Contact your local council if you want a full explanation of how they calculate your bill.
How to pay and check your balance
Each council offers its own Council Tax services that let you:
- check your Council Tax account balance
- make Council Tax payments
- make Council Tax enquiries
You can usually check your balance and pay online. You can also set up a Direct Debit or a standing order from your bank account.
Check your bill to find out which other payment methods you can use.
