Paying your Council Tax bill

Your Council Tax bill tells you:

  • who is registered for Council Tax in your home
  • how much you have to pay for the year
  • how that amount has been worked out
  • the dates you have to pay

The cost is usually split into 10 monthly payments. You may also be able to pay smaller amounts:

  • every week
  • every 2 weeks
  • over 12 months instead of 10

Ask your local council about the payment options they offer.

Working out how much you’ll pay

You’ll need to know 3 things:

If you have an empty property or a second home, you may need to pay a rate that’s different from what your council charges for main homes.

Contact your local council if you want a full explanation of how they calculate your bill.

How to pay and check your balance

Each council offers its own Council Tax services that let you:

  • check your Council Tax account balance
  • make Council Tax payments
  • make Council Tax enquiries

You can usually check your balance and pay online. You can also set up a Direct Debit or a standing order from your bank account.

Check your bill to find out which other payment methods you can use.

If you think your bill is wrong

You can challenge your bill or your Council Tax band if you think they’re wrong. You must keep paying your Council Tax while you wait for a response.

If you think your bill is calculated wrongly

Contact your local council if you think you should be getting a discount based on your household circumstances.

If you think your Council Tax band is wrong

You can challenge your Council Tax band on the Scottish Assessors website if you think it is wrong.

If you want to appeal the decision

If your local council or the Scottish Assessors do not find in your favour you may be able to appeal. To do this, apply to the First-tier Tribunal for Scotland (Local Taxation Chamber).
