Dog Control Notice

If your dog is out of control the local council can give you a Dog Control Notice. This says what you must do to bring your dog under control.

You'll commit a crime if you do not do what the Dog Control Notice says.

You might get a:

  • fine of up to £1,000
  • ban on owning a dog

If your dog is dangerous it might also be destroyed.

It does not matter if someone else was looking after your dog at the time. As the dog owner you're responsible for the dog's behaviour at all times.

There are certain things that need to happen before the local council can give a Dog Control Notice.

You can read more about Dog Control Notices in the Control of Dogs (Scotland) Act 2010.
