Rent increases if you have a short assured tenancy

If you have a short assured tenancy, your landlord cannot increase the rent during the fixed term of your tenancy.

They can only increase the rent when renewing the tenancy agreement at the end of the fixed term.

If you do not accept the rent increase

If you do not accept a rent increase, you can take your landlord to a tribunal. The tribunal is called the First-tier Tribunal for Scotland (Housing and Property Chamber).

The tribunal will decide if the rent increase is too high.

How to apply to the tribunal

Complete a AT4 form and send it to the tribunal. Get an AT4 form on gov.scot.

There’s no cost to apply to the tribunal.

You must apply to the tribunal before the new rent takes effect.
