What is a personal employer?
A personal employer is an individual, for example, a parent. They are not an organisation. They employ an individual for personal reasons, not as part of running a business. This could be finding a babysitter (other than a direct family member) to look after your child or looking for a home help or personal assistant.
This does not apply when the activity is carried out during a child or protected adult’s family relationship. To find out more, look for ‘family relationships’ in the Regulated Roles Guidance.
When you, the ‘personal employer,’ look to employ an individual for a service for a child or for yourself, Disclosure Scotland advise you to ask for proof of PVG scheme membership before allowing them to carry out this role. You should do this by asking them to share their Confirmation of PVG scheme membership with you when they receive it from Disclosure Scotland.
