Check if you can drive a vehicle in a Low Emission Zone
Unless it is exempt, your vehicle must meet specific Euro emission standards to be driven in a Low Emission Zone (LEZ) in Scotland.
These are:
- Euro 4 for petrol cars and vans
- Euro 6 for diesel cars and vans
- Euro VI for diesel buses, coaches and HGVs
- Euro IV for petrol buses, coaches and HGVs
Vehicles that meet these are called ‘compliant’.
Check your vehicle
Use your vehicle’s registration number to check if it is compliant.
Check your vehicleIf your vehicle is not registered in the UK, you cannot use this checker. Check your vehicle’s emissions standards in the vehicle manual or with the manufacturer. You can also contact your national vehicle authority.
Vehicles you do not need to check
LEZ restrictions do not apply to these vehicles:
- motorbikes
- mopeds
- fully electric vehicles
Hybrid vehicles are subject to the same restrictions as fully petrol or diesel vehicles. Check if yours is compliant using the vehicle checker before you drive it in a LEZ.
If your vehicle is non-compliant
If your vehicle does not meet the emission standards, it may be exempt. If it is, you can drive it in a LEZ. Check which vehicles are exempt.
If it is non-compliant and not exempt, you may get a fine for driving it in a LEZ. Check information on LEZ fines.
Problems with the checker results
You have a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN)
If you have a penalty charge and you believe your vehicle is compliant, you must contact the council that issued the charge. Transport Scotland and the Scottish Government cannot help you if you have a penalty charge.
The council will confirm with the DVLA if your vehicle is compliant if you appeal. If it is compliant, the DVLA will update their records to show this.
Your checker result looks incorrect
If you have not yet driven in a LEZ but you think your result is incorrect, contact us by email.
Email lowemissionzonesenquiries@gov.scot with the following information:
- the owner’s name and address
- the vehicle make, model and colour
- the vehicle registration number (number plate)
We need this information to check if your vehicle is compliant. We will share this information with the DVLA.
If you have received a penalty charge, Transport Scotland and the Scottish Government cannot help you. You must contact the council who gave it to you. Check how to appeal a LEZ fine.
Your vehicle registration number has changed
Your result may not be correct if your registration number has changed in the last 5 years.
Contact us by email if you think your result is incorrect.

If you are buying or selling a vehicle
When buying or selling a vehicle, check if the vehicle meets the emission standards or is exempt.
A vehicle that currently has an exemption may not be compliant if it changes ownership or usage.
