Fire safety for older people

As you get older, the risk of fire in your home can increase.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service website gives information and advice on making sure older people's homes are protected against fire.

This includes advice on:

  • fitting and maintaining smoke alarms
  • staying safe in the kitchen
  • what to do if a fire starts
  • plug sockets
  • electric blankets and candles

Interlinked fire alarms

Every home in Scotland must have interlinked fire alarms.

Being interlinked means if one alarm goes off, they all go off. You may not always hear the alarm closest to the fire, especially if you’re somewhere else in the house. An interlinked system will alert you immediately.

For more information about the types of alarms you need, read making sure your home is fire safe.
