For advice and support on dealing with a death abroad, phone the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on 020 7008 5000 (24 hours). You can also read their guide on coping with death abroad.

If you're on a package holiday you should tell your holiday rep about the death. Some tour operators have welfare teams who can help you with arrangements.

If the person who died had travel insurance, you may be able to claim the costs of bringing the body back to Scotland. You should contact the insurance company as soon as you can, they'll organise a local firm to hire a funeral director for you.

Visit the Repatriation Help website or phone 0844 3240708 for more information on bringing a body back to the UK.
