Sharing rent information with the council as a private tenant

Your local council can ask you for information about the rent you pay.

You can also be asked by a rent officer who works for Rent Service Scotland.

You do not have to give this information if you do not want to.

Information you can be asked for

The council can ask about things like:

  • your tenancy, including the type of tenancy you have
  • the property, including the address, the number of bedrooms, and if it’s furnished
  • your rent, including how much your rent is, how often you pay, and what is included
  • any rent increases, including when your rent was last increased and what the rent was beforehand

The council can only ask for this information once every 12 months.

Why the council need this information

Councils must assess rent conditions in their area. Collecting this information can help them do this.

This will help the council make decisions about rent controls.
