You can find more information on how the Scottish Government regulates burials, cremations and death certificates on gov.scot.
Inspectors use the register to:
- plan inspections
- check that businesses comply with the law
- promote good practice
The register also makes information about the sector easier to access.
Who should join
You should join the register if you are, or are planning to be, a:
- funeral director (arranges and conducts funerals)
- burial authority (responsible for burial grounds)
- cremation authority (responsible for crematoriums)
- hydrolysis authority (responsible for water cremations)
An authority can be:
- a person
- a company
- an organisation
Why you should register
You’re encouraged to add your own details.
The register helps government inspectors check businesses and organisations are doing things properly.
The register also gives people an easy way to find information about these businesses and organisations.
This includes showing them if any of these businesses and organisations have not met the required standards.
If you do not add your details to the register, then the Scottish Government may add them for you. They’ll tell you in writing if they do.
