Write a will
You can write a will yourself or use a solicitor.
You may want to get legal advice if your circumstances are complex. For example:
- you share a property with someone who is not your husband, wife or civil partner
- you want to leave money or property to a dependant who cannot care for themselves
- you have several family members who may make a claim on your will, such as children from another marriage
- your permanent home is outside of Scotland
- you have property overseas
- you have a business
Solicitors set their own fees, and the cost can vary depending on how complex your circumstances are.
Search for a solicitor in your area on the Law Society Scotland website.
You may be able to get help to write a will at a reduced cost through:
- your employer
- a trade union
- an insurance policy
- a charity or voluntary organisation
Keeping a will safe
You can keep a will at home or store it with:
- a solicitor
- a bank
- a company that offers will storage services
- Registers of Scotland’s Register of Deeds
Make sure to tell your executor, a close friend or relative where your will is kept.
