Create a rent increase notice

Use this service to create a rent increase notice for a tenant with a private residential tenancy.

You must send your tenant this notice as part of increasing the rent for a private residential tenancy.

The process is different for other types of tenancy. Check rent increase rules for different tenancy types.

What you’ll need

To create the notice, you’ll need the following information:

  • your name
  • your tenant’s name
  • the property’s address
  • the tenancy start date
  • the current rent you charge
  • the amount you want to increase the rent to
  • the date you want the rent to increase
  • the date you last increased the rent, if applicable
  • your letting agent’s name and address, if you’re using one

You can use our online form to create the notice. This will automatically work out the notice period. You’ll be able to download the completed notice to give your tenant.

You must complete the full form. You cannot save and return to it.

If a tenant does not agree with a rent increase

Temporary changes to the way reviews of rent increases are decided ended on 31 March 2025.

Any applications lodged but not yet determined by Rent Service Scotland or the First-tier Tribunal for Scotland (Housing and Property Chamber) by this date will continue to be decided on the basis of the temporary changes.
