Ending your tenancy with a council or housing association
You must give the council or housing association the correct amount of notice to end your tenancy. This ends the legal agreement so you can move out.
The process is different if a council or housing association wants to evict you.
How to give notice
You must give written notice to the council or housing association that you’re moving out. You must give them at least 4 weeks’ notice.
If you send it by email or post, you must allow 2 extra days for them to receive it.
You can give notice at any time.
How to end a joint tenancy
If all joint tenants want to move out, you can end the tenancy together.
If only you want to move out
You must give 4 weeks’ written notice to the council or housing association and to any other joint tenants to end your part in the tenancy.
The tenancy will continue for the remaining tenants. They’ll be responsible for paying all of the rent between them.
