If your benefit was moved from Disability Living Allowance for children to Child Disability Payment

If your benefit was moved from Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for children to Child Disability Payment, you do not have to submit your Adult Disability Payment application before your 18th birthday.

You should apply for Adult Disability Payment as soon as you can after you turn 18. This is so that:

  • Social Security Scotland has time to process your application before your 19th birthday
  • you do not have a break in payments if you’re eligible

You should leave enough time to complete and submit your application. Once you start your application, you have up to 56 days (8 weeks) to submit it.

When your Child Disability Payment will end

If you’re awarded Adult Disability Payment, your Child Disability Payment will stop the day before your Adult Disability Payment starts.

If you’re not awarded Adult Disability Payment, your Child Disability Payment will continue until you’re 19.

Your Child Disability Payment will end when you turn 19, even if you've applied for Adult Disability Payment and you’re waiting for a decision.

If you do not know if your benefit was moved

If you do not know if your benefit was moved from Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for children to Child Disability Payment, you can:

  • ask your parent or guardian – they should have received letters about the move if you were under 16 at the time
  • contact Social Security Scotland on 0800 182 2222 (8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday)
