Healthcare and treatment if you’re affected by FGM

If you’re affected by Female Genital Mutilation, the NHS (National Health Service) can help you.  

In Scotland, you have a right to free healthcare whatever your immigration status. 

Accessing health services 

You can speak to: 

  • your doctor (GP) 
  • a health visitor 
  • a midwife  
  • a sexual health clinic

Clinical examinations 

If you need a clinical examination you can tell the health workers if you'd prefer a female or male examiner. 

Surgery 

Health services may recommend surgery if you’re either: 

  • unable to have sex or have difficulty going to the toilet 
  • pregnant and at risk of problems during labour or delivery
