The European Union Women Innovators Prize was first awarded in 2011. The Prize was launched to identify women innovators who can act as role models for the next generation.
Although women are more and more active in research, there are still too few women who create innovative enterprises. This represents an untapped potential for Europe which needs to unleash this potential to remain competitive and find solutions to key challenges such as climate change, energy and resource efficiency, health and so on.
The Prize aims to provide inspiration to the next generation of women innovators and to raise awareness of entrepreneurship as an option for women researchers.
The contestant must not have previously received any other EU prize that is the subject of the current competition.
A full list of exclusions can be found in the contest rules.
Women who have founded or co-founded their company and who have at some point of their careers benefitted from the EU's research framework programmes, the EURATOM Framework Programme, the Competitiveness and Innovation framework programme (CIP) or actions relating to research and innovation under the European Structural and Investment Funds (known as the Structural Funds prior to 2014).
The contestant must reside in an EU Member State or a country associated to Horizon 2020.

An independent panel of judges from business and academia will select the winners who will be announced in 2017.
