Funding for exceptionally talented young people, of meagre means, in any branch of the arts. Open to any person under the age of 30 who is living and working, or studying, in Scotland, if their financial circumstances make it difficult to progress in their chosen field.
There are no minimum or maximum amounts specified. Grants will be awarded as a result of assessments and the circumstances of the individual applicant. The scheme also provides mentors, where necessary.
The Dewar Arts Awards were set up in 2002 by the Scottish Executive in memory of Scotland's First Minister, Donald Dewar. The Dewar Arts Awards support Scotland's best and brightest young artistic talent.

Personal applications cannot be considered, as all individuals must be nominated by a sponsor (not a close family member). The Awards will not fund CD production.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate outstanding talent in any artform, a clear view of their future development (or of a particular project), and how receiving an Award would help them to achieve this.

Applications are considered for individuals in any branch of the arts. A typical award winner will have come to the attention of tutors or employers as having quite exceptional talent.
So far, over 300 awards have been made. Winners include film makers, visual artists, dancers, actors, photographers, textile designers, contemporary jewellers, writers, musicians, composers and conductors.

In order to be eligible, applicants must provide two referees who can testify to the quality of their work, and, where possible, supply examples.
After the initial application stage, a professional assessment or audition will be arranged.
