Carer assessments

To find out what support your local council can give you as a carer, ask for a 'carer assessment'. The social care or social work department provides this for free.

Your local council can also give the person you care for a 'care assessment'.

The home of the person you care for

The council and local health board may also provide services to make sure that the person you care for can live at home as independently as possible. This might mean recommending a major change to their property or getting some equipment.

The Community Care and Health (Scotland) Act 2002 requires every health board in Scotland to have a carer information strategy. NHS Boards must provide a copy of their carer information strategy to anyone who asks for it.
